Checking Mezuzahs in Elul: A Timely Jewish Practice

As the month of Elul approaches, Jewish tradition emphasizes spiritual preparation for the High Holidays. One meaningful custom during this time is checking the mezuzahs and tefillin to ensure they are kosher and properly placed. This practice is not only a fulfillment of a mitzvah but also a way to bring protection and blessing into our homes.

In the accompanying video, the Rebbe shares the significance of this custom, stating:

זה מנהג טוב בחודש אלול לבדוק המזוזות והתפילין, המזוזה שבפתח הבית היא מקור עצום של שמירה וברכה בבית...
Translation: It is a good custom in the month of Elul to check the mezuzahs and tefillin. The mezuzah at the entrance of the home is a tremendous source of protection and blessing for the household

Why Check Mezuzahs in Elul?

Elul is a month of reflection and teshuvah (repentance), a time to prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Checking mezuzahs ensures that the sacred scrolls inside are intact, legible, and properly affixed, as even minor damage can render a mezuzah non-kosher. A kosher mezuzah serves as a spiritual shield, safeguarding the home and its inhabitants.

How to Check Your Mezuzah

  1. Consult a Sofer (Scribe): Take your mezuzahs to a certified sofer who can examine the parchment for any damage, such as faded ink or cracks. Machon Stam offers expert sofrim to check your mezuzahs and tefillin. You can access our Mezuzah/Tefillin Checking Form to begin the process ($15 per mezuzah, $100 for tefillin). Simply fill out the form, print it, and include it with your securely wrapped items, shipped to:
Machon Stam, 415 Kingston Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11225, USA.
Use a reliable carrier like UPS or FedEx for safe delivery. Once received, you can track your order’s progress via their STaM Tracker™ portal.

  2. Inspect Placement: Ensure the mezuzah is affixed correctly on the right side of the doorpost, at the appropriate height and angle.

  3. Regular Maintenance: While Elul is an ideal time, mezuzahs should generally be checked twice every seven years, as environmental factors like heat or humidity can affect the parchment.

A Source of Blessing

As the Rebbe emphasizes, a mezuzah is more than a ritual object—it is a conduit for divine protection and blessing. By taking the time to check your mezuzahs this Elul, you are actively inviting holiness and security into your home.
